GOVERNMENT, IS IT RIGHT OR WRONG TO BE PART OF IT?
In the New Testament we are told that the early Christian
named Erastus was a city stewart. To quote Romans 16:23, "Erastus, who is the city’s director of public
works, and our brother Quartus send you their greetings." We are never told that Erastus was wrong or somehow
Satanic to have been a city stewart or that anyone else told him that he must quit serving the public.
And remember Joseph. Joseph was a “vizier,” a position next
only to the King of Egypt, in some modern countries comparable to Vice President. Does the Bible ever condemn
Joseph for having been a vizier next to Egypt’s King? No, it does not.
And what about the prophet
Daniel? He was a top notch government official as well as a prophet. Where in the Bible
does God condemn him for that? Did God say it was wrong to serve as he did? Of course
not!
And God certainly had much love for King David.
There are few kings anymore but David’s position as chief head of Israel would be comparable to that of a modern
President or Prime Minister, although actually even more powerful. Again, David too was not told to
step down from being a King.
Watchtower disfellowships,
that is severely shuns, Jehovah’s Witnesses who seek office to improve their local communities, larger communities such
as counties and states or provinces and nations.
They
point out that Christ could have become king of Israel but John 6:15 says “Jesus, knowing that they intended to come
and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself,” that is, he didn’t care to serve in government
and so nor must any Christian.
Some Christians will find
that convincing, others will weigh the other scriptures and say it is not. However, Watchtower insists
that everyone must do as they say or else leave and in the process also lose all normal ties with Jehovah’s Witness
family and friends.
Watchtower underscores that a scripture
says Satan is the “ruler of the world” (John 14:30;1 John 5:19; Rev 12:9) to promote its view that God disapproves
of any Christian who becomes part of a government, but it ignores that scriptures also exist saying that God Himself upholds
there being human governments. (Ro 13:1)
For example to quote Romans
13:1: “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.”
In short, then, as with so many other things, it is a matter
of conscience if you want to be involved somehow with government. (Romans 14:1-22) Consider the various
scriptures, pray to our heavenly Father, and you will make whatever the best decision is for yourself.
Let the scriptures, all of them, not Watchtower or the few scriptures it pushes be your
guide.
