Russell Cantwell: "In the 60s when I first started associating with JWs in Southern California our Circuit Overseer was Russell Cantwell. He was one of the plaintiffs in the landmark Supreme Court case Cantwell vs Connecticut. I found a Time article about the case here: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,763796,00.html One thing that was unusual about this Circuit Overseer is that he and his wife raised a daughter while in the circuit work. They lived in an apartment at a Kingdom Hall and their daughter went with them to each congregation they visited. When we had him as a CO the daughter must have been about 13 or so. Just wondering if others had Cantwell as CO? He was a company man to be sure but I remember him being a bit more balanced on some issues. Once, he told us all to bring a dollar bill and a calendar with us to the lecture he was giving after the Watchtower Study. At the lecture, he went on to discuss how some people were paranoid about demons. He recounted how one JW had thrown away their dishes because they had bought them at a rummage sale and were afraid they might be demonized. He then asked the JW how would he know if something new was not demonized. Perhaps the truck driver who delivers new items to department stores might be having seances on the way? As for the dollar bill, he had us look at the eye that is on the back. He said that originated with an Egyptian god (Horus, I think) and that if anyone felt their money was demonized he would take it off their hands. Then he pulled out the calendar and pointed out the names of the weeks and months and pointed out that we still use the calendar, even though its origins were pagan. He mentioned how one brother had come up with a "theocratic" calendar and that Brother Rutherford had told him he was wasting his time on it. (I didn't know until later that this brother was the Clayton Woodworth, the editor of The Golden Age and that this calendar was published by the Society in 1935.) Richard Leighton - This guy really liked to make life miserable. I was a MS during his visits. Would really tell everybody off, complain about how lazy they were, ect. He was really stuck in a 50s mentality, subjection of women, etc. Never really talked to him much other than going out in service a few times. His talks would mainly complain that things "used to be better." Lots of stories about how out there this guy was.  Favorite quote during a public talk, used to tell us how close we are to "the end":  "They used to make school buildings tall, and they were cheap to heat, and kids got lots up exercise going up and down the stairs. Now they make school buildings long, and kids don't get enough exercise, and they are more expensive to heat."  I also remember him reading a poem that was probably written back in the early 1980s. It complained that "things are different from the good ol' days." AN INVITATION TO SERVE OTHERS IN CHRIST Raymond Franz was formerly on the Governing Body of the Watchtower Society over Jehovah's Witnesses and is now author of two major books and many other smaller publications. (See commentarypress.com)  About "elders" he notes the following on pages 690-691 and 727-728 of In Search Of Christian Freedom: In Egypt the Israelites had respected older people acting on behalf of their families and community.  After settling in Canaan every Israelite city and village also had such older ones, that is natural elders, who served there, too.  They were not appointed inany official sense, but rather they were respected because they were older, more mature and wiser. In the times of Christ and the apostles such older ones or elders were also serving their families and communities.  When Paul and Barnabas went to provide a ministries of relief for groups of Christians scattered about the Mediterranean they saw such elders.  The Bible at Acts 14:23 does not say that Paul and Barnabas in Crete appointed the older respected persons to be elders for they already were elders, but it says they appointed them in the sense of appointing or having them do particular things to help. Elders among early Christians were nobody's overlords or masters but servants, helpers or assistants called forth from the world in general to minister to needs of local Christian groups. At Acts 6:1-6 the apostles asked the Christian community in general to select seven men of good reputation who manifested God's Spirit and wisdom.  The apostles then appointed the seven to fairly distribute food.  Paul commends Stephanas and his household for serving others.  He also urges those whom Stephanas and his household served to in turn render such services to others. Franz does not state this but it is common sense knowledge that today, too, there are natural elders, that is older reputable Christians.  Each group of two or more Christians knows who those are.  In some cases an entire group may even consist of all elders.   Where felt necessary for any reason such groups are perfectly free to certify that one or more among them are considered to be their minister or ministers.  This is often most practical, sometimes due to needs such as in order to hold legally recognized weddings, funerals etc.
